Design process
Following preparation of broad concept designs for the exhibition of heritage precincts by Group GSA, Jackson Teece Architecture was engaged to develop the designs and prepare construction documents.
Working closely with RailCorp's Office of Rail Heritage and the NSW Rail Transport Museum, Jackson Teece and its specialist team of exhibition designers, Convergence Design, landscape architects, Context, and engineers, Aurecon, developed an exciting venue, centring on an interpretive strategy and exhibits integrating the physical, operational and historical aspects of the site and rail across the state.
The concept behind the Centre is a series of different but connected and complementary places. An important consideration in the architect's work was close integration of the separate parts of the Centre to make the visitor experience an enjoyable one, allowing unimpeded access between a variety of types of exhibit.
A key influence on the form of the Centre was retention of the railway lines where possible. One line is used to provide a platform alongside the new Exhibition Hall. Trains such as the 'Southern Aurora' will pull up at this platform, becoming an ever-changing part of the display.
