NSW Rail Transport Museum

The NSW Rail Transport Museum (RTM) is an independent, not-for-profit organisation established in 1962 to "collect, preserve and present the railway heritage of NSW for the benefit of the community". The RTM has been based in Thirlmere since 1975, where they have operated and cared for much of the state's heritage rolling stock for over 30 years.

History

The RTM established the Museum on a 5.4-hectare site at Thirlmere in 1975, relocating from Enfield to the now-disused Picton-Mittagong Loop Line.

When the RTM first moved to Thirlmere, the site consisted of the station, the stationmaster's house, the goods shed and some minor ancillary buildings located on the eastern side of the rail corridor.

With the support of its membership and volunteers, the RTM has made improvements to the site over time to store, maintain and display the items as it is today. The demands on the site and its facilities for storage and train operations have increased significantly during this time.
